The Invisible RX-8

Don’t get us wrong, we’re not talking about whole number multiples here or some macho contest with your friends in your mom’s Ford station wagon. If you’ve occasionally travelled over the posted speed limit and hate it when the fuzz catches you doing it, this installment of our Mazda tech may be for you. Investing in a radar / laser detector for your ride is a viable alternative to racking up costly tickets and frequent roadside conversations with local law enforcement. Upon hearing about the Calibre Radar and Laser Protection system, we gladly placed our order and within 48 hours our package arrived. We actually received two offerings

from the company: its Bluetooth-capable Calibre single pod radar detector and the front license plate mounted K40 Defuser. This type of radar detector / jammer needs to be mounted somewhat permanently; therefore it cannot be transferred from car to car easily like many other radar detectors out there. However, the Calibre claims to offer protection against commonly used X, K and Ka Superwide bands by alerting the driver of radar presence. The K40 Defuser hides the license plate – the most reflective part of a vehicle, and therefore what police officers are trained to aim at – from the infrared light gun. Since installing this stealthy device we’ve been impressed with its accuracy and range; the Calibre Radar and Laser Protection system is a very welcome addition to our project RX-8. 3.
For the installation, we took the RX-8 to Fifth Gear Auto Sound & Performance, where Frankie “Crazy” Valenti hooked it all up for us. Follow along as we explain the steps to installing these two components, as well as the necessary controls and status displays in the cockpit of our PAS Project Mazda RX-8.

First up was the K40 Defuser. As the actual unit is hidden in a universal-mount license plate frame, and our plate simply hangs on the mesh in our front fascia, we had to remove the unit from the frame and find an alternate mounting point.
As per Calibre’s instructions, the unit must be mounted perfectly parallel to the ground, which is why you’re seeing the level in the photo.
We took off a panel cover as we’ll need access to the area directly behind the front fascia.
We ran the wiring for the K40 Defuser behind the front fascia, ready to join the wire with the one from the Calibre pod we’ll get to momentarily.

We used silicone to attach the sensor to our bumper cover, not too far from the plate. It is camouflaged nicely against the dark green colour of the RX-8.
The front radar receiver is next. It can be mounted behind ¼-inch thick fibreglass, plastic or rubber, but not metal or chromed plastic, so the nose of our RX-8 was a perfect place. Take care to ensure the horizontal arrows on the unit are aligned parallel to the ground and the vertical ones are perpendicular. Ensure the unit sits in the center of the vehicle.
With the provided self-tapping screws, securing the receiver to a crossbeam under the hood was a bolt-in affair.
We now have to connect up the wires from the radar receiver and K40 Defuser to ground, power, a fuse, and laser alert LED.
