Saturn May Be a New Kind of Car Company, But It's Got the Same Old Ku Klux Klan
by Mary Hollens The Saturn Corporation, which builds the po ular General Motors p . small cars in S!'. ring H111, Tennessee, h as become the target of a boycott by the Commission o n R eli i on and Racism (CORR) because o Ku Klux Klan activity a t the Satu d i r e c t e d a t African American workers. In Spring Hill, union members charge that leaders of the United Auto Workers have been ineffective in addressing issues of work lace fairness. In spite o t he cooperative relationshi between S a t u r n a n a t h e UAW, S aturn workers sa the atmosphere inside t e p lant is not very team-like. Five ' m o n t h s a g o , CORR, a n independent civil and human rights organization based in Memphis, brought a contingent of CORR activists to plcket GM h e a d a u a r t e r s i n Detroit to p;otest t he KKK activity. In calling for a S a t u r n boycott, CORR pointed to both Klan activity and other conditions inside the plant. CORR said one African American worker received a KKK calling card in her locker a t the Saturn lant last summer, a cross was b urnexin f ront of another worker's home. Historically, receiving the KKK calling card was'the prelu& t o a lynching.

Wor ers say this harassment stems from speaking out about Klan activity a nd o ther problems in the plant. Mike Bennett. vresident of the plant's UAW locai, s'ays t he KKK calll ng card was no joke. Bennett calls Farmer's comments a traditional management answer. Bennett says the police were called, but were unable to lift finger rints from the card. TEAM SPIRIT T he Saturn work force is 21.6% people of color, most of whom are African Americans. Yet only 9.7% of Saturn managers are people of color. Some Saturn workers say the 21.6% fi ure seems to be a quota, above w fich S aturn will not go. D o r a Mack, UAW r e c o r d i n g secretary a t Saturn, says racism is disease of our society, and that there is n o m ore of it a t Saturn than in a uv o ther GM plant. But Mack suggests that Saturn's team structure makes a difference. "In the old world. if vou had a racist beside you, you d id& know it because you came to work and did your 'ob and went home," she sa s "Now, i ecause we're teams, it's d i k r e n t . " Mack says team members "hire" people to work on their teams, and they are looking for people who can work together. They want harmony. (continued on page 1 1)
