Comfort Handling Full size spare tyre Peugeot’s 307 Touring wagon adds another model choice to the French manufacturer’s popular range. It is aimed squarely at those with active lifestyles who want space, style and performance but who don’t need a large family wagon. Stretching the hatchback’s wheelbase 10cm and adding another 22cm to the overall length gives increased passenger space, load capacity and improved dynamics. Available in petrol and diesel versions pricing starts at $31,690 for the HDi 2.0 litre diesel (5 speed manual only), $33,490 for the XSE petrol 5 speed (as tested) or $35,690 for the XSE automatic. Standard features on the XSE include; climate control, power windows, cruise control, 16” alloy wheels, 5 disc CD player, auto headlight illumination and rain sensing wipers. An extensive list of safety features are also standard consisting of driver and passenger front and side airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, ABS equipped four-wheel disc brakes with EBFD, brake assist and active front head restraints. Externally the Touring shares front body architecture with its hatchback sibling, the now familiar deep windscreen dominating the design. From the “B” pillar back, the roofline remains flat to the slightly raked and large rear screen, vertical taillights run either side of the tailgate which has a low loading lip courtesy of a deeply scalloped rear bar. Inside, the broad dashboard is extremely deep due to the steeply raked windscreen. Aluminium trimmed instruments sit directly in front of the driver, surrounding an information display containing warning lights and odometer. However the speedo can be difficult to read, its markings are reasonably fine with only the “odd” speeds marked. Housed in the titanium coloured centre dash are the audio and climate controls. Selecting the desired temperature is as simple as pressing a button, but the switch panel is set low in the console and can take your attention away from the road. Easy to use column mounted stalks look after wipers, lights, trip computer, audio and cruise control functions. Driver comfort is well catered for with standard sports style seating which offers lumbar and height adjustment along with a “captain’s chair” style armrest. Initially the squab support feels lacking, but the more kilometres you cover the more the seat seems to mould to your shape. A tilt-reach adjustable steering wheel means most people should be able to f tune their driving position. One ine shortcoming is the lack of room next to the clutch pedal, which can be annoying in the peak hour crawl. Mounting the rear seats higher than the front, cinema-style, gives

Speedo markings Lack of low end performance Windscreen wipers passengers a good view with lots of head and legroom, although foot space is at a premium. While the short cushion and lack of centre armrest might find adults squirming in their seats on long trips. There are lots of places to store your bits and pieces with good size door pockets and a small air conditioned glovebox. Also, there is under seat storage trays in front and two covered compartments in the luggage area. Lift the rear seat cushions, remove the head restraints and you can fold the 60:40 rear seat completely flat offering lots of extra luggage space, easily accessed through the low tailgate opening. With a generous glass house, all-round vision is excellent but some wet weather driving showed up one problem. The long “butterfly” wipers, obviously unchanged from left hand drive, leave a large unswept area next to the drivers “A” pillar creating a blind spot. On the plus side the standard fit rain sensing wipers alter their setting automatically depending on the intensity of the rain and speed of the car. Carrying 146kg more weight than the equivalent hatchback, the Touring’s 2.0 litre has definitely lost some of its punch. The spongy fly by wire throttle adding to the sensation. Bottom end torque is lacking but using more revs keeps everything moving along and fortunately this is one engine that spins smoothly without any fuss. The 5 speed gearbox has a light, slightly rubbery shift quality, but it’s direct and easy to use. Engine noise intrudes into the normally quiet cabin on the freeway suggesting a slightly short 5th gear. Some of the longer hills on our road test route highlighted the car’s lack of torque, not that it struggled, there just wasn’t much left in reserve. Away from the freeway and onto some back roads any shortcomings in the engine department are compensated for by the supple suspension. Across patchy and undulating tarmac the ride quality and handling are very good, the car tracking straight, maintaining its line through rough corners. While the steering isn’t sports car direct it has good feel and weight, the nose turning into corners decisively. Mild understeer is the main handling characteristic, the tyres offering good levels of grip, while the brakes are strong and fade free, although the pedal doesn’t offer much feel. SUMMARY: The 307 Touring offers solid construction, good handling, comfort, a host of standard equipment and safety features with the added bonus of usuable load space in a car not much longer than an average hatchback.
