Dr. Golfinos Named Chairman of Neurosurgery
John G. Golfinos, M.D., associate professor of
neurosurgery and otolaryngology, has been appointed chairman of the Department of neurosurgery. A faculty member since 1995, Dr. Golfinos is widely known for his expertise in multimodal treatment of acoustic neuromas, brain tumors, skull base tumors, and neurofibromatosis, as well as for his research on diagnostics and therapeutic outcomes. In 1997, he collaborated with colleagues in the Department of Radiation Oncology to establish New York’s first Gamma Knife facility for the minimally invasive treatment of brain tumors, and in 2008, he cofounded the highly regarded Neurofibromatosis Center at NYU Langone Medical Center. He also launched neurosurgical clinical trials in conjunction with colleagues in neuroradiology, neurooncology, and radiation oncology, and has worked closely with our Cancer Center oncologists to treat metastatic brain tumors. His appointment comes at a particularly exciting time for neurosurgery at the Medical Center. Dr. Golfinos will oversee creation of a new multidisciplinary Brain Tumor Center for adults and children, as well as a significant expansion of expertise in cerebrovascular and endovascular surgery and complex spinal procedures. The Department of Neurosurgery also plans to increase the number of residents and intensify research into brain tumors and other areas, such as epilepsy. Dr. Golfinos graduated from Princeton University and received his M.D. from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency and chief residency in neurosurgery, as well as a fellowship in molecular biology research, at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Coeditor of the textbook Head Injury, he has appeared regularly in Castle Connolly’s “Top Doctors” rankings over the past decade and, in 2008, was featured both in New York magazine’s Best Doctor issue and in Castle Connolly’s latest edition of America’s Top Doctors for Cancer.

Dr. Zuckerman and Dr. Bernstein Chosen to Lead Their Professional Societies
Joseph D. ZuckermaN, m.D., Walter a.L. Thompson professor of orthopaedic surgery and chairman of the Department of orthopaedic surgery, was elected president of the american academy of orthopaedic surgeons (aaos) at its annual meeting in Las Vegas earlier this year. an academy member since 1992, Dr. Zuckerman has served as chairman of its surgical skills committee and its council on education, and most recently, as the group’s vice president. With 24,000 members, the aaos is the world’s largest and most prestigious asso-
ciation of musculoskeletal specialists. “I am honored to assume the leadership position of this great organization,” said Dr. Zuckerman. “In my upcoming year as president, I have chosen to expand the area of practice management, because I feel it is so centrally important to every one of our members— particularly in these challenging times.” he also plans to concentrate on the issues of emergency care, diversity in orthopaedics, and advocacy and funding for orthopaedic research. and hip and knee replacement. a graduate of cornell university and the medical college of Wisconsin, he completed his residency at the university of Washington, followed by fellowships at harvard’s Brigham and Women’s hospital and at the mayo clinic as a visiting clinician in shoulder surgery. In 2002, Dr. Zuckerman received the clinical research award from the orthopaedic research and education Foundation (oreF). he is
also a five-time winner of the Teacher of the Year award from the residents at NYuhJD.

associate professor of psychiatry, vice chairwoman for education in the Department of psychiatry, and associate dean for graduate medical education, has been elected president of the 38,000-member american psychiatric association (apa). previously, she served as the organization’s vice president as well as in other posts. “I’ve been involved with the apa since I was a resident,” says Dr.
Bernstein, “and I’m excited at the opportunity to lead the group at such a challenging time.” her priorities include helping the apa maintain its relevance in the face of a changing clinical landscape, and representing psychiatry in the upcoming debate over national healthcare. Dr. Bernstein received her m.D. from columbia university, college of physicians and surgeons, followed by an internship at st. Luke’s/roosevelt medical center in New York and psychiatric residency training at columbia university, the New York state psychiatric Institute, and columbia-presbyterian medical center. While she maintains a small clinical practice, Dr. Bernstein’s focus
since joining the NYu faculty in 1993 has been on education, both within her department and in her role as associate dean overseeing NYu Langone’s many residency and fellowship programs. For the past five years, she has also chaired the Dean’s council on Women, which promotes mentoring and professional development programs for NYu’s female medical students and faculty.
